Christian Ingram and Elana Ingram at the RCS sports hall of fame ceremony

Christian Ingram, Class of 2015, and Elana Ingram, Class of 2018, were inducted into the Roxboro Community School Sports Hall of Fame (HOF) on Dec. 12, 2024. The former basketball stars and siblings make up the second class inducted into the HOF.

At the induction ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 12, Managing Executive Director, Darkarai Bryant, who served as the high school principal when the siblings were at RCS, said it was a joy to watch their passion for playing basketball and to see how strong their relationship was. “One thing I always enjoyed was watching both of these athletes play and how they cheered one another on,” Bryant said. “Their bond was clear and easily recognizable.”

Former high school men’s varsity basketball coach, Justin Bettendorf shared how Christian was the type of player a coach is lucky to have once in a career. “Coaches can picture this type of player immediately,” Bettendorf said. “Anything you ask them to do, they do it without complaint and if they disagree with you, they don’t have an outburst, they have an honest, sometimes excited or rushed, depending on the situation, side conversation with you and they make their case and a lot of times they end up being right.” He went on to say that what every coach works toward and wants for their players is for them to grow up and be outstanding young men, like Christian, and “young men that you’re excited and proud to tell everyone and anyone who will listen, I coached that guy.”

Christian said he never thought he’d be in this position coming to RCS. He thanked Coach Bettendorf for all the sacrifices he made as a coach and touched on how their bond went beyond the court. He also thanked his family for all they did to support him and his sister. He shared how his mom used to stand under the rim and help him and Elana with their free throws and that either she or his father were at every game. “There is always the name on the front [of the jersey], but you always want to make the name on the back proud,” Christian said.

Former high school varsity women’s basketball coach, Brian Cousins spoke about Elana and her impressive work ethic, expressing how her hard work showed her character. “Elana did everything she could,” Cousins said. “She wanted to win and she was feisty when she wanted something.” He added that it was special to watch her play, noting that she was a player you only see every once in a while. “She’s done a lot of things here at RCS that I don’t think are ever going to happen [again],” he said. “Records are meant to be broken, but she set the bar pretty high.”

Alana joked that she was not much of a public speaker despite the fact that she has spent time coaching, but she thanked her family for all their support over the years. She also thanked her coaches and teachers like Anne Bettendorf for all they did for her while she was at RCS.

The two were also honored the following evening, Friday, December 13 before the varsity men’s basketball game and Elana’s jersey was retired.
